“For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God… He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself… For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding.” — 1 Corinthians 14:2, 4, 14–15 (NKJV)
Jesus often withdrew to pray. Before choosing the twelve, He prayed all night (Luke 6:12). In Gethsemane, He prayed in agony. His disciples saw His prayer life and asked Him, “Teach us to pray.” Prayer wasn’t a formality for Jesus—it was the way He stayed aligned with the Father’s heart.
Paul expands our understanding by teaching us to “pray in the Spirit.” This kind of prayer isn’t about eloquence—it’s about connection. It’s not limited to your understanding—it’s led by the Holy Spirit, from your reborn spirit. When you pray in tongues, your spirit speaks directly to God. It bypasses your mind and builds you up.
Praying in the Spirit is one of the most misunderstood and neglected gifts in the body of Christ. Yet Paul said clearly, “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all” (1 Cor. 14:18). He saw it as essential—not optional—for edification, intercession, and spiritual strength.
This is not about strange behavior—it’s about supernatural alignment. When you don’t know what to pray, the Spirit does. When your heart is heavy, He intercedes. Jude 20 says we “build ourselves up on [our] most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.” It’s how we stay alert, sensitive, and strong.
God’s Spirit is in you, and He desires to pray through you. The more you yield to Him, the more you’ll recognize His leading—not just in prayer, but in every area of life.
Praying in the Spirit isn’t limited to church or crisis. It’s a lifestyle of communion with the Father—spirit to Spirit. The more you practice it, the more peace, clarity, boldness, and strength you’ll experience.
Don’t neglect the gift the Holy Spirit gave at His baptism. Use it. Stir it. Treasure it.
Today, take time to pray in the Spirit. Start where you are. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you grow in this grace. Let your spirit pray. Let your mind rest. Let His presence refresh you from the inside out.
