“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.” — Ephesians 5:18 (NKJV)
Jesus stood up at a feast and made a bold promise: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink… out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37–39). He was speaking about the Holy Spirit—God’s answer to our dryness and weakness. God doesn’t want you running on empty—He wants you filled and overflowing.
Paul picks up this idea and makes it a command, not a suggestion: “Be filled with the Spirit.” In the original Greek, this phrase implies continuous action: “Be being filled.” In other words, stay filled. Live filled. Don’t treat the Spirit as a one-time experience. He is your daily source.
Many believers treat the Holy Spirit like a fuel station—visiting Him when they feel drained. But the Spirit is not a pit stop. He’s the ever-present power source within. You were designed to live filled—led by, empowered by, and aware of His presence at all times.
Think of a sailboat. The boat doesn’t move by rowing or effort—it moves when the sail is lifted and catches the wind. The wind provides the power and direction. In the same way, when you yield to the Spirit, you position your heart like a sail. His presence fills, empowers, and directs you. Your agreement—through daily desire and surrender—is what catches the wind. It’s not striving, it’s yielding.
Paul contrasts this with being drunk with wine—something people turn to in order to escape or feel better temporarily. But the Spirit doesn’t numb you—He awakens you. He doesn’t impair your thinking—He renews your mind. He doesn’t lead to regret—He leads to life.
To be filled is to yield. It means opening your heart, letting go of control, and inviting the Holy Spirit to take the lead in your thoughts, your words, your emotions, and your actions. It’s not about trying harder—it’s about trusting deeper. The Spirit fills the surrendered heart.
God is not stingy with His Spirit—He delights to fill His children. You don’t have to beg Him. He’s already made the invitation. But He won’t force His way in. Being filled is your choice—but it’s His joy.
Today, slow down and receive. Take a moment to breathe deeply and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you afresh. Like a lifted sail, let your heart catch the wind of His presence. Let Him refresh your spirit, sharpen your mind, and soften your heart. You were not meant to live dry. You were meant to overflow.
