“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.” — Romans 12:10 (NKJV)
The night before Jesus went to the cross, He did something shocking. He got down on His knees and washed His disciples’ feet—including Judas. The King of Kings took the lowest place. Afterward, He said, “I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you” (John 13:15).
That’s what honor looks like.
Honor isn’t flattery or applause. It’s a posture of the heart that says: “I see God’s value in you. I prefer you. I make space for you. I serve you—not to elevate myself, but to lift you up.”
And it’s important to recognize who Jesus and Paul were calling us to honor: one another in the body of Christ. This is not about how we treat the world—it’s about how we treat fellow believers. God cares deeply about how His children honor one another. It’s how unity is preserved. It protects our hearts from growing cold or bitter toward each other. And it makes the Church strong—able to fulfill her mission.
Paul exhorts us to “outdo one another in showing honor.” That means we lead the way in honoring fellow believers. It’s not waiting for someone to earn it—it’s choosing to treat them according to who they are in Christ.
In a world obsessed with self-promotion, Jesus modeled self-demotion. He humbled Himself. He came not to be served, but to serve. And now, He calls us to walk in that same Spirit—especially with our brothers and sisters in the faith.
Honor breaks pride. Honor heals division. Honor opens hearts. It reminds us—and others—of the dignity God has placed in each member of His family.
And here’s the key: you’re not doing this alone. The Holy Spirit within you empowers you to love like Jesus. He reminds you that your worth is secure—so you’re free to lift others without needing to be lifted yourself.
Today, look for a practical way to honor another believer. Speak a word of encouragement. Let someone else go first. Celebrate someone’s win. Choose the towel over the title.
When the Church walks in honor, the world sees Jesus.
