“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” — Romans 12:2 (NKJV)
When Jesus said, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” He was calling people to change the way they think (Matthew 4:17). Repentance is more than feeling sorry for your sin—it’s about letting go of your old mindset and embracing the truth from God’s perspective.
Paul picks up this same idea and brings it into our ongoing spiritual growth. Transformation doesn’t happen by trying harder. It happens when your mind is renewed by the truth of God’s Word. That word “renew” means to renovate—to tear out the old and rebuild something new in its place.
You already have a new spirit, but your mind needs to catch up. If you don’t actively renew your thoughts, you’ll end up living like the old you—even though that old self is dead and gone. This is why spiritual growth isn’t about becoming something new; it’s about learning to live from what’s already true in Christ.
Renewing your mind is not a one-time event—it’s a daily practice. Picture a glass filled with dark, murky water. When you place it under a running faucet of clean, clear water, the old water begins to overflow until the glass is filled only with the new. That’s what happens when you fill your heart with God’s Word. As His truth flows in, the old remnants of worldly thinking are flushed out. The mind of Christ begins to influence how you respond, how you speak, and how you live.
And remember: God is always good. His Word doesn’t expose you to condemn you—it reveals truth to set you free. The more time you give to His Word, the more clearly you’ll think, the more peacefully you’ll live, and the more fully you’ll walk in His perfect will.
This is how transformation happens—from the inside out.
