“For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” — Romans 8:6 (NKJV)
Jesus told Nicodemus, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit… You must be born again” (John 3:6–7). He wasn’t just teaching doctrine—He was showing the way into real life. A life led by the Spirit is not some mystical option for the elite—it’s the normal Christian life.
Paul builds on this by giving us a powerful contrast. The mindset of the flesh leads to death—but the mindset of the Spirit leads to life and peace. You don’t have to earn that peace—you just need to set your mind on the Spirit. That’s where peace begins. That’s where life flows.
Being spiritually minded means more than just thinking about God occasionally. It means making His voice the primary influence in your thought life. And the best way to train your mind to recognize His voice is through His written Word. Jesus said His words are “Spirit and life” (John 6:63). The more you fill your heart and mind with the Word of God, the more clearly you’ll discern the Spirit’s way of thinking.
You were never meant to live from the outside in, reacting to the chaos of the world. You were meant to live from the inside out, responding to the calm of the Spirit. Carnal thoughts—selfishness, fear, lust, pride—only drain your strength. But spiritual thoughts—rooted in love, grace, faith, and truth—bring clarity and confidence.
Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me… they won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice” (John 10:5, 27 NLT). Being spiritually minded means tuning your heart to His voice and turning away from the noise of every other one.
You don’t have to figure it all out—you just need to follow the One who knows the way.
Today, ask the Holy Spirit to train your thoughts. Slow down. Listen. Open the Word. Set your focus on the things above. As you stay spiritually minded, you’ll experience more than just good ideas—you’ll walk in God’s peace, filled with His life, anchored in His unshakable goodness.
