Day 4: Jesus, Our Servant King
Reading: Matthew 20:25-28; Philippians 2:5-8
'But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”'
Matthew 20:25-28
'Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. '
Philippians 2:5-8
Devotional: Jesus revolutionized leadership by redefining greatness. In the world's system, greatness means power, recognition, and control. In God's Kingdom, greatness means humble, trust-filled service. Jesus didn't demand to be served—He came serving. The cross represents the ultimate act of sacrificial love, where the King of Glory laid down His life as a ransom.
This servant leadership flows from complete trust in the Father. Jesus could serve wholeheartedly because He knew His identity, His mission, and His Father's faithfulness. When you grasp how wholeheartedly Christ loves you, serving others transforms from burden to joy. You're not serving to earn approval or recognition—you're responding to unconditional love. Private acts of service done for God's glory open doors of favor that self-promotion never could. Embrace the counterintuitive way of the Kingdom: decrease so He can increase, serve so others can flourish.
Reflection Question: How does understanding Christ's servant heart change your approach to serving others?
