Day 5 Devotional: Choosing to Serve the Lord

Day 5: Choosing to Serve the Lord
Reading: Joshua 24:14-15; Psalm 127:1

'“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord!  And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”'
Joshua 24:14-15

'Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.'
Psalms 127:1

Devotional: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Joshua's declaration challenges every believer to make a conscious choice about whom they will serve. Serving God requires intentional decision, especially in a world promoting self-service and independence. Unless the Lord builds your house, you labor in vain. Your best efforts, apart from God's grace, cannot transform hearts or guarantee outcomes.

This truth brings both humility and hope. Humility because we acknowledge our limitations—children make their own choices, circumstances defy our control, outcomes remain uncertain. Hope because we serve a faithful God who sees, strengthens, and supplies. You can pray, trust, love practically, and respond as the Holy Spirit leads without controlling, panicking, or striving. Your unseen faithfulness matters. Every prayer whispered, every sacrifice made, every act of love given in trust—God sees it all. Keep serving. Keep trusting. The Kingdom increases through humble, wholehearted service done in faith.

Reflection Question: What area of your life needs to shift from striving to trusting God?
